Woodson, Nelson take 2008 awards

Woodson, the team MVP, and Nelson, the rookie of the year, will be honored at the Packers Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, July 18

Cornerback Charles Woodson will be honored as the team's most valuable player and receiver Jordy Nelson as rookie of the year at the Packers Hall of Fame induction banquet on Saturday, July 18.

The headliners that night will be new the inductees: Dorsey Levens and Antonio Freeman.

Woodson was brilliant while playing most of the season with a fractured toe sustained in Week 1 against Minnesota. Woodson, who started 13 games at cornerback and three at safety, tied teammate Nick Collins for the NFC lead with seven interceptions and was voted to his fifth Pro Bowl. A second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press, Woodson tied his career high with 79 tackles, paced the team with 20 passes defensed and added a career-high three sacks. He returned interceptions for touchdowns against Detroit and Tampa Bay.

The Packers traded out of the first round to take Nelson with the 36th overall selection. He was the only rookie to play in all 16 games and earned two starts. He finished fourth on the team with 33 receptions for 366 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned 11 kickoffs for an 18.9-yard average. Nelson was the first rookie in team history to have at least 30 catches and a kickoff return of at least 45 yards.

Meanwhile, Freeman and Levens were stalwarts of the Packers' recent Super Bowl teams. Freeman played eight seasons for the Packers and ranks sixth in team history in receptions (431) and yards (6,651) and third in touchdown receptions (57). Levens also played eight seasons for the Packers. He ranks fifth in team history with 3,937 rushing yards, and his 1,435 rushing yards in 1997 ranks third.

The ceremony will be held on July 18 and tickets are $125 apiece or a table of 10 for $1,150. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with dinner and program to follow at 7 p.m. For more information, e-mail Gwen Borga at gborga@packerhalloffame.org or call 920-965-6984.
