Thompson breaks down the Packers' roster

The general manager goes through each position group as well as the draft picks while addressing the shareholders on Thursday.

During the football segment of the Packers' shareholders meeting on Thursday, general manager Ted Thompson went through each of the positions.

"Obviously, I'm not going to give away any great secrets up here today in terms of what we think we're really good at and what we're not. I'm just going to say we're pretty good at everything," Thompson said, drawing laughter from the estimated 7,500 in attendance.

Thompson's roster breakdown

— Wide receivers

Returning players: Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, James Jones, Jordy Nelson, Ruvell Martin.

Practice squad: Jake Allen, Brett Swain.

Rookies: JaRon Harris, Kole Heckendorf, Jamarko Simmons, Patrick Williams.

Thompson: We're very proud of these guys. The five guys on the top of the list have been with our team the last couple of years.

— Tight ends

Returning players: Donald Lee, Jermichael Finley, Tory Humphrey, Evan Moore (injured reserve), Spencer Havner (inside linebacker, too).

Practice squad: None.

Rookies: Devin Frischknecht.

Thompson: These are athletic guys and we're looking forward to getting those guys involved a little bit more.

— Offensive line

Returning players: Chad Clifton, Daryn Colledge, Scott Wells, Jason Spitz, Josh Sitton, Allen Barbre, Breno Giacomini, Tony Moll.

Practice squad: None.

Free agency: Duke Preston.

Rookies: T.J. Lang, Jamon Meredith, Evan Dietrich-Smith, Andrew Hartline, Dane Randolph.

Thompson: We've put a lot of resources in the offensive and defensive line. A lot of attention is being paid to the right tackle position, with Mark Tauscher not being with our team at this present time. We're going to put some guys in position to compete for some jobs. Mike (McCarthy) is hoping to have some established ideas of how we're going to line up pretty soon during training camp so we're kind of set. This is a good group.

— Quarterbacks

Returning players: Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn, Brian Brohm.

Practice squad: None.

Rookies: None.

Thompson: We feel like Aaron played very well last year. I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised at Matt Flynn and Brian Brohm. They've been able to go through a whole offseason now, the quarterback school. We're looking forward to watching them and their advancement.

— Running backs

Returning players: Ryan Grant, Brandon Jackson, DeShawn Wynn, Kregg Lumpkin (injured reserve), Korey Hall, John Kuhn.

Practice squad: None.

Rookies: Quinn Johnson, Tyrell Sutton.

Thompson: The running back position is a strong group. Again, the top four guys on this list we had last year and two of the fullbacks we had last year. We added a draft choice along the way. Not much is going to change with this group.

— Defensive line

Returning players: Ryan Pickett, Cullen Jenkins (injured reserve), Johnny Jolly, Justin Harrell, Alfred Malone, Michael Montgomery, Anthony Toribio

Practice squad: None.

Rookies: B.J. Raji, Jarius Wynn, Ronald Talley, Dean Muhtadi.

Thompson: We spend an inordinate amount of time working on our offensive and defensive line because we feel like that's the strength of any team in the National Football League. We're very proud of these guys. The one guy I'll mention in particular is Cullen Jenkins. We're extremely happy to be able to get him back.

— Inside linebackers

Returning players: Nick Barnett (injured reserve), A.J. Hawk, Brandon Chillar, Desmond Bishop, Danny Lansanah, Spencer Havner (tight end, too).

Practice squad: None.

Rookies: None.

Thompson: Hawk and Barnett are obviously ahead in that group along with Brandon Chillar.

— Outside linebackers

Returning players: Aaron Kampman, Jeremy Thompson, Brady Poppinga.

Practice squad: None.

Rookies: Clay Matthews III, Brad Jones, Cyril Obiozor.

Thompson: We have that headed up with Aaron Kampman, who obviously is a great player, a great professional. He's going to be a handful for the offenses that we go against.

— Defensive backs

Returning players: Charles Woodson, Al Harris, Nick Collins, Atari Bigby (injured reserve), Tramon Williams, Will Blackmon, Pat Lee (injured reserve), Joe Porter, Aaron Rouse, Jarrett Bush, Charlie Peprah.

Practice squad: None.

Free agency: Anthony Smith.

Rookies: Brandon Underwood, Trevor Ford.

Thompson: This is a large group. We need a large group to play in the NFL. Obviously, Charles and Al are two of the elite guys along with Nick Collins and Atari Bigby.

— Special teams

Returning players: Mason Crosby, Jeremy Kapinos, Brett Goode.

Practice squad: Durant Brooks.

Rookies: None.

Thompson: We have a battle with Kapinos and Brooks. Mason Crosby coming back and Brett Goode, who we picked up right before the start of the regular season last year because our projected snapper got hurt. He snapped in every game, never had a bad snap. I think he was paving a driveway at the time we called him back in Arkansas. You just never know how this thing's going to turn out.

Thompson on the draft picks

B.J. Raji, 1st round, defensive line: He's a special kind of player because of his size and explosion.

Clay Matthews, 1st round, outside linebacker: He's almost ideally suited for what we're going to be trying to do.

T..J. Lang, 4th round, offensive line: He's someone that you guys are going to like a lot before it's all said and done.

Quinn Johnson, 5th round, fullback: He's a bruiser.

Jamon Meredith, 5th round, offensive tackle: He's one of the top athletic offensive linemen who were in the draft.

Jarius Wynn, 6th round, defensive end: He plays with leverage and is very well suited for playing in our new defense.

Brandon Underwood, 6th round, cornerback: He has the same qualities as our existing cornerbacks.

Brad Jones, 7th round, outside linebacker: Very athletic outside linebacker that played every possible position when he was at Colorado.
