Position: Offensive guard
Status: Unrestricted free agent
2002 salary: $650,000
2002 season summary: Blackshear spent a month in Packers' training camp before being released on the final cut-down day before the regular season. He did not play anywhere during the season until he was re-signed by the Packers on Christmas day. He played only on special teams over the last two games then, in the regular season finale against the Jets and the wild-card playoff contest against the Falcons.
2003 outlook: At 33 and on the down side of his career, Blackshear is not likely to be back with the Packers. Though he has experience (96 career starts) and size (6'6", 323 pounds), the Packers have shown a recent trend of selecting offensive linemen with draft picks who they can groom in backup roles. Though Blackshear was re-signed late in the 2002 season, it was mainly for insurance purposes. The fact that he could not make the roster in last year's pre-season camp is a good indication that he will not be back for another chance in 2003.
