Charlotte, NC - Quarterback Chris Weinke is fighting for a job with the Panthers and right now it looks like he will be the number three quarterback on the roster. Weinke is in a battle right now with second year quarterback Randy Fasani for that final quarterback spot.
Right now, Weinke is not even thinking about the upcoming quarterback battle that will happen in training camp.
"I think that the quarterback situation will play out down the road, right now, everyone's out here just working on things and having fun," said Weinke. "There's always going to be competition. I think that brings out the best in all of us, and down the road, I think that's going to make all of us better."
Randy Fasani also understands his role and just wants to have a chance to make the team in training camp this summer.
"I understand the situation; Rodney Peete was the starter last year, so he's going to go into the season as the starter this year. They brought Jake Delhomme in to compete with Rodney for the starting job, and Chris Weinke was the starter two years ago. I was a fifth-round draft pick last year," said Fasani. "I'm fine with being the fourth-string guy, but I still have a great chance of making the team."
The Panthers wanted to improve their quarterback situation and that is one reason that they signed free-agent quarterback Jake Delhomme this off-season. But allowing Chris Weinke or even Randy Fasani to sit back and have a year to just watch and learn from Rodney Peete and Jake Delhomme could prove to be an important move for the Panthers.
Most likely this season or the next will be Peete final and that is one reason the Panthers signed Delhomme even if he doesn't win the starting job this season. By allowing Weinke or Fasani to be the third string quarterback for a whole season in the future either one could be a valuable back-up in the NFL.
