The Panthers have a decision to make in the coming days regarding their backup quarterback spots.
No. 2 Derek Anderson's an unrestricted free agent, and while they like his command of Rob Chudzinski's offense, it would change them drastically if he had to replace Cam Newton since he can't really run. Last year's No. 3, Jimmy Clausen, is due a $923,000 roster bonus soon, and they could easily cut him and use that amount to work toward getting under the salary cap before the start of the March 13 league year.
Coach Ron Rivera called Clausen "most certainly a guy that's in the mix in terms of coming back next year and competing," but the Panthers might prefer a backup with more mobility so they could keep the Newton playbook if he was injured.
