Panthers' Scouting Combine Preview: OL

Even though the NFL Scouting Combine has been going on for a majority of the week, the players will finally be getting on the field Friday. The first group up is specialists, offensive line and tight ends. The Panthers will be most interested in the offensive line, particularly the tackles. Here is a few players Panthers' fans should be paying extra attention to.

La’el Collins

College: LSU

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 305 lbs.

Arm Length: 33 1/4”

Hands: 10 3/8”

Notes: La’el Collins is probably the best of this group and also is the least likely to be available when the Panthers are on the clock at number 25. He was the starting left tackle for the Tigers for the past two seasons after one season spent as the starting left guard.

T.J. Clemmings

College: Pittsburgh

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 309 lbs.

Arm Length: 35 1/8”

Hands: 10 3/8”

Notes: Clemmings is an interesting prospect because there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding him. He has the physical tools to be a left tackle however he spent the past two years as a right tackle for the University of Pittsburgh. Before his junior year, he played defensive end for the Panthers so his experience at the offensive tackle in general is limited. The physical tools are too enticing for him to fall out of the first round as he has the potential to be an excellent left tackle in the NFL in time.

Ereck Flowers

College: Miami

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 329 lbs.

Arm Length: 34 1/2”

Hands: 9 7/8”

Notes: Ereck Flowers decide to enter the NFL Draft as a junior however he has gained a lot of experience in a short time. He played in 12 games at right tackle his freshman year before moving over to left tackle the past two seasons. Lance Zierlein wrote in his scouting report about Flowers, “has the size, feet and talent to be a very good left tackle but he will be a work in progress unless he can eliminate some of the balance issues that could plague him.” A strong combine could help his draft stock and eliminate some of these concerns.

Cameron Erving

College: Florida State

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 313 lbs.

Arm Length: 34 1/8”

Hands: 10 3/8”

Notes: Erving is another converted defensive linemen who spent almost two and half seasons at left tackle before switching to center the last five games this past season. Erving was a key contributor on the 2013 National Championship team. He also has experience blocking for a mobile quarterback with Jameis Winston under center the past two years.

D.J. Humphries

College: Florida

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 307 lbs.

Arm Length: 33 5/8”

Hands: 10”

Notes: He started 17 games at left tackle for the University of Florida over his past two seasons but he did miss time each season due to injuries. Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network tweeted that he believes Humphries is a first-round talent. Before leaving for the University of Florida, Humphries lived in Union, NC playing for Mallard Creek.

Other Prospects to Watch: Jake Fisher (Oregon), Cedric Ogbuehi (Texas A&M), Jeremiah Poutasi (Utah)
