Panthers Agree to Terms with Four Draft Picks

The Carolina Panthers opened rookie mini-camp on Friday and signed three of their five draft picks the night before, with a fourth draft pick signing on Friday.

The night before the Carolina Panthers opened their rookie mini-camp the team agreed to terms with outside linebacker Shaq Thompson, offensive tackle Daryl Williams, and middle linebacker David Mayo.

Then after the morning practice on Friday, the team was able to agree to a contract with running back Cameron Artis-Payne. This leaves second round pick Devin Funchess as the last rookie to sign, however he is participating in the team’s mini-camp.

Ever since the new CBA was agreed upon in 2011, it has become an easier process for teams to agree to contracts with their draft picks. The salary for these draft picks is based on where they are drafted with little to no room for negotiations.

This is a breakdown of the Panthers’ four draft picks contracts, according to Spotrac.

The Carolina Panthers do have a fifth-year option on Shaq Thompson, who was the team’s first round pick. This option is only available for first round picks and is one of the reasons GM Dave Gettleman did not want to trade back. If the team traded out of the first round, he would have lost that option on Thompson.
