Carolina Panthers Waive Stephen Hill

The Carolina Panthers announced after Sunday's practice that Stephen Hill has been waived due to the injury suffered in yesterday's practice

The Carolina Panthers tweeted this morning that wide receiver Stephen Hill had been waived due to the injury suffered in practice yesterday. On that play Hill ran a crossing route and jumped to make the catch but landed awkwardly. He dropped to the ground and almost immediately threw his helmet off, clearly in a tremendous amount of pain.

The Charlotte Observers’ Jonathan Jones tweeted that he tore his ACL and will be done for the year. Hill was once considered a promising wide receiver out of Georgia Tech. He has great size for the position (6’4” and 215 pounds) and was one of the reason’s the New York Jets drafted him in the second round in 2012.

He has struggled since entering the NFL and in two seasons with the Jets caught 45 passes for 594 yards and four touchdowns. He has not played in an NFL game since 2013 and spent last season on the Panthers’ practice squad.

There was a great deal of optimism around Hill entering this season as he hoped to revive his NFL career. However, he entered training camp with concerns swirling around him. On Tuesday he was pulled over in Concord and was cited with a misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

With the release of Hill, the Panthers added wide receiver Paul Browning out of Colorado State-Pueblo.
