Carolina Panthers Release Depth Chart

The Carolina Panthers released their first "unofficial" depth chart ahead of their first preseason game Friday night against the Buffalo Bills. Even though it isn't official, there certainly was a few surprises.

Pos. First Second Third Other
WR Kelvin Benjamin Ted Ginn, Jr. Brenton Bersin Jarrett Boykin
LT Michael Oher Nate Chandler Amini Silatolu David Foucault
LG Andrew Norwell Amini Silatolu Ricky Henry
C Ryan Kalil Brian Folkerts Jordan McCray
RG Trai Turner Chris Scott Martin Wallace
RT Mike Remmers Daryl Williams Tony Hills
TE Greg Olsen Ed Dickson Richie Brockel Scott Simonson
WR Corey Brown Jerricho Cotchery Devin Funchess Damiere Byrd
QB Cam Newton Derek Anderson Joe Webb
FB Mike Tolbert Richie Brockel Lee Ward
RB Jonathan Stewart Fozzy Whittaker Jordan Todman Cameron Artis-Payne

  • The first thing that stands out with the Carolina Panthers’ offensive depth chart is the fact that the team’s rookies are going to have to earn their playing time. Second round wide receiver Devin Funchess is third string and fifth round running back Cameron Artis-Payne is fourth.
  • Second year wide receiver Corey Brown is listed as the starter opposite Kelvin Benjamin. This certainly wasn’t expected entering training camp but Brown has looked much better this offseason than he did last year. This is his job to lose.
  • There wasn’t any surprises on the offensive line as the team returns four starters from the end of last year. Michael Oher is the only new addition at left tackle to replace the departed Byron Bell.

Pos. First Second Third Other
LDE Charles Johnson Wes Horton Arthur Miley Rakim Cox
LDT Star Lotulelei Colin Cole Kyle Love Terry Redden
RDT Kawann Short Dwan Edwards Micanor Regis Chas Alecxih
RDE Frank Alexander Kony Ealy Mario Addison Steve Miller
SLB A.J. Klein Shaq Thompson Jason Trusnik
MLB Luke Kuechly David Mayo Ben Jacobs
WLB Thomas Davis Adarius Glanton Brian Blechen Kevin Reddick
LCB Charles Tillman Bene Benwikere Teddy Williams T.J. Heath
RCB Josh Norman Carrington Byndom Melvin White Lou Young
SS Roman Harper Robert Lester Dean Marlowe
FS Tre Boston Kurt Coleman Colin Jones Marcus Ball

  • Similar to the offensive side of the ball, first round pick Shaq Thompson is going to have to earn that starting linebacker job. Right now veteran A.J. Klein is penciled in as the starting strongside linebacker next to Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis.
  • Defensive end Frank Alexander has looked very good this offseason and has earned the starting job opposite Charles Johnson. Alexander missed a majority of last season due to two suspension and looks to be making up for lost time.
  • Another surprise is the fact that Tre Boston was listed as the starting free safety next to Roman Harper. For a majority of training camp, Kurt Coleman has started at strong safety with Harper sliding over to free safety. Coleman joined the Panthers’ as a free agent this offseason and has played well this training camp.

Pos. First Second Third
K Graham Gano
P Brad Nortman
KO Graham Gano
H Brad Nortman
PR Ted Ginn, Jr. Brenton Bersin Corey Brown
KR Ted Ginn, Jr. Fozzy Whittaker Jordan Todman
LS J.J. Jansen

  • There was not a whole of surprises here with Ted Ginn Jr. penciled in as the starting punt returner and kick returner. The one surprise is the fact that Jordan Todman is listed as the third kick returner with Fozzy Whittaker ahead of him. Last season, Todman was one of the best on kick returns and ranked third in the NFL in average yards per kick return.
