Predicting Carolina Panthers 53-man Roster

The Carolina Panthers are halfway through the preseason and are quickly approaching the first roster cutdown date on September 1st. Publisher Brandon Croce breaks down what he believes the 53-man roster will look like at the start of the regular season for the Panthers.

  • Kelvin Benjamin is currently still on the roster and will have to remain on the roster until after the first round of cuts on September 1st. Any player put on injured reserve right now, is automatically put on waivers and the Panthers would absolutely lose him. However, after this first round, I would expect him to end up on injured reserve and not count against the 53-man roster.
  • The hardest decision when cutting the roster down to 53 players was at the running back position. Brandon Wegher has played incredibly well this preseason and it would be tough to leave him off the roster. However, the Panthers basically have three players at the position guaranteed spots in Jonathan Stewart, Cameron-Artis Payne and Jordan Todman, who is the number one kick returner. When you add in Mike Tolbert, who is more a running back than fullback, the Panthers have four running backs. This is why Fozzy Whittaker and Wegher were both left off the 53-man roster.

  • The one surprise on this side of the ball would be the addition of Rakim Cox. The Panthers pass rush has been non-existent for the most of the preseason and the only player who has been able to get pressure is Cox. The loss of Alexander really helped his chances to make the team and keeping five pass rushers would not be a huge surprise for this group.
  • For right now, Kony Ealy is the starting right defensive end but that is due more to the fact that the team doesn’t have any other options. Ealy has struggled this preseason and if he wants to continue to start will need to improve leading up to the regular season.
  • Another roster battle will be between Carrington Byndom and Teddy Williams for that backup cornerback position. The Panthers signed Williams due to his special teams play but Byndom has more experience playing cornerback. With only six cornerbacks, if you count Colin Jones, it doesn’t leave much of a buffer for injuries.
