Predicting the Panthers Final 53-Man Roster

The Carolina Panthers have played their final preseason game and now the only standing between them and the regular season is one final round of cuts. The team will need to get their final roster down to 53 men by 4 PM on Saturday. Publisher Brandon Croce predicts what he believes the 53-man roster will look like at the start of the regular season for the Panthers.

Notes

  • The Carolina Panthers are going to have a tough decision to make at running back by Saturday afternoon. Undrafted rookie Brandon Wegher has played pretty well this preseason carrying the ball 29 times for 110 yards and has averaged 3.79 yards per carry. However, the coaching staff may want a more veteran back like Fozzy Whittaker who does a lot of the little things very well, like pass protection. I would expect Wegher ends up on the team’s practice squad.
  • The wide receiver position is going to be another one worth watching as it will all depend how many players the coaching staff decides to keep. Right now, Brenton Bersin is most likely the sixth wide receiver on the depth chart. If they decide to only keep five, he will be the one on the outside looking in. However, I believe they will decide to keep six and Bersin will make the final roster.

Notes

  • At this point, I believe the Panthers are going to carry five defensive ends because I don’t know how Rakim Cox could be cut. He has played incredibly well this preseason and added another sack to his total in the final game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This team can never have too many pass rushers and a player like Cox would be great for depth at the position.
  • The linebacker position is going to be another one that the organization will struggle with. The team added a number of linebackers this offseason. I would not be surprised to see Adarius Glanton as well as Ben Jacobs being in this final round of cuts.
  • The cornerback position seemed to have already been decided in the last round of cuts when the team released Melvin White. Free agent signing Teddy Williams has looked good this preseason and with his special teams play, he is almost a lock. The other cornerback position, I believe, will go to T.J. Heath, who the team signed after Chris Houston retired. Except for a deep pass he gave up against the Steelers on Thursday night, he has done a good job and would be a quality depth player for this secondary.
