The one thing that was almost certain to happen today was that the Carolina Panthers were going to have to cut some quality football players. That is exactly what happened on Saturday as the team cut their roster down to 53 men, according to the team’s site.
|C||Brian Folkerts||Washburn||Waived/Injury Settlement|
|CB||T.J. Heath||Jacksonville State||Waived|
|CB||Lou Young||Georgia Tech||Waived|
|DE||Arthur Miley||Southern||Injured Reserve|
|G||Jordan McCray||Central Florida||Waived|
|LB||Adarius Glanton||Florida Atlantic||Waived|
|LB||Jason Trusnik||Ohio Northern||Terminated/Vested Veteran|
|OG||Ricky Henry||Nebraska||Terminated/Vested Veteran|
|RB||Jordan Todman||Connecticut||Terminated/Vested Veteran|
|WR||Damiere Byrd||South Carolina||Waived|
The biggest surprise in this group was most likely running back Jordan Todman, who lost his spot to undrafted running back Brandon Wegher. The team signed Todman as a free agent this offseason due in large part to his ability as a kick returner. He surprised the team though with his ability as a running back in the preseason though.
The problem was that this became a numbers game with Jonathan Stewart and Fozzy Whittaker already on the roster and the team drafting Cameron Artis-Payne, there was limited space on the roster. While Wegher is still developing, he has the potential to be an every down back while Todman would be limited to just a change of pace type back.
The team also only has five wide receivers on the roster with the release of Brenton Bersin, Mike Brown and Damiere Byrd, which is a bit surprising. They lose Kelvin Benjamin for the season and Devin Funchess and Jerricho Cotchery dealing with injuries makes you wonder if this is a position they will try and address prior to the season. They already made a trade earlier in the week for Kevin Norwood and will now scour the waiver wire for veteran help at the position.
On the defensive side of the ball, the biggest surprises were probably Adarius Glanton, who started at outside linebacker at the end of the season, as well as defensive end Rakim Cox, who had two sacks this preseason. The Panthers added a number of linebackers this offseason with Shaq Thompson, Jason Trusnik (who was also cut today) and David Mayo as well as the return of A.J. Klein.
Cox was signed prior to training camp after he had a strong showing at the Veteran Combine earlier in the offseason. He had strong games that bookended the preseason with a sack against the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers. It would not be a surprise to see Cox and Glanton end up on the Panthers’ practice squad if they clear waivers.
