The Carolina Panthers made a roster move ahead of tomorrow’s game against the New Orleans Saints and brought back a familiar target for Cam Newton. Wide receiver Brenton Bersin was cut after the final preseason game for the Panthers but was brought back as a member of the practice squad at the start of the regular season.
The second year player from Wofford College has a very similar skill set to Cotchery in that he is a possession wide receiver. He isn’t going to beat anyone with great athleticism or speed but he showed reliable hands as a rookie. He finished last season year with 15 receptions, and only one drop, for 168 yards and one touchdown.
Bersin had a fairly quiet preseason with the Panthers catching seven out of 12 targets for 88 yards and one touchdown over the four games. However, he has the size that the Panthers covet and it would not be a surprise, even though he was just called up, to see him get a few targets tomorrow.
The Panthers had to make room for Bersin on the active roster and decided to waive tight end Brandon Williams. The third-year tight end out of Oregon has four career receptions on eight targets for 44 yards, which all came last year. Fans may remember him most though for being the player ejected during the Saints game last year after Cam Newton’s rushing touchdown.
