- The Carolina Panthers are going to be turning to two rookie running backs to carry the run game with Jonathan Stewart and Fozzy Whittaker both ruled out for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There was little chance that Whittaker was going to be available but Rivera sounded optimistic earlier this week about Stewart possibly being available. The Panthers' featured running back was out of a walking boot and running on a treadmill. However, that optimism dwindled as the week went on and the team wants to make sure Stewart is completely healthy come playoff time. This will be the first time all season the Panthers will activate Brandon Wegher and he will be paired with fellow rookie Cameron Artis-Payne.
- The biggest surprise is the fact that both Ted Ginn Jr. and Kurt Coleman are listed as doubtful, which means they have a 25% chance of playing Sunday. Even though Rivera liked their chances of playing earlier, Rivera said Ginn's knee didn't come around like he would hope, according to Panthers.com's Max Henson. At this point in the season, and with a first round bye locked up, the Panthers are most likely being extra cautious with their injured players.
- There is an illness moving through the Panthers with Ryan Kalil missing practice on Wednesday, Thomas Davis on Thursday and now Star Lotulelei missing Friday's practice. All three are listed as probable and should be available Sunday.
