Evaluating the Carolina Panthers' Draft History Under Dave Gettleman

The Carolina Panthers have won three straight NFC South Division titles and this is due in large part to the success general manager Dave Gettleman has had in his three Drafts with the team.

Takeaways from the Past Three Drafts

  • The first thing that stands out in the past three NFL Drafts for the Carolina Panthers under GM Dave Gettleman is how well they have drafted. The team has drafted 16 players the past three years and there is only three that are no longer on the team. More importantly of those 13 still remaining, 10 are already starters for this team or will be competing for starting roles this offseason.
  • The other impressive takeaway that stands out is that Gettleman has never had all his picks in a single season. Now part of this is due to the fact that he is not afraid to make trades and use his picks to move around in the Draft. Last year, the team made two trades, once to move up to select Devin Funchess and then later to move up to select Daryl Williams. The Panthers have never had a seventh round pick under Gettleman. The Panthers only have six drafts pick this year due to the team trading one to the Chicago Bears for Jared Allen.
  • The team has also been very balanced, drafting on both sides of the ball with seven offensive players drafted and six defensive. However, the tam has tended to use their top picks on defense with four of their six picks in Rounds 1 and 2 going to defense.
  • Each of the past two years though the Panthers have drafted a wide receiver with one of their first two picks. While this group struggled in the Super Bowl, it is hard to imagine the team using another high draft pick on this position.
  • The running back position is another that Gettleman has focused on, selecting a running back in each draft. However, this is the one he has had the least success with and there is only one of the three he has drafted still on the roster. The Panthers have already set up a visit next month with Heisman Trophy winner, Derrick Henry
