On Friday, during an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio Sterling Shepard said that he has had a private workout with the Carolina Panthers. He also said he had a workout with the Houston Texans and will be meeting with the Los Angeles Rams
The former Oklahoma Sooner is ranked by Scout as the eighth best wide receiver in this class after 233 receptions, 3,482 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns in four seasons. He had a breakout season as a senior with 86 receptions, 1,288 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, and finished in the Top 3 in all three categories in the Big 12. He also led the conference in yards per reception (19.0) showcasing his big play ability.
The wide receiver position is not one that is a pressing need for the Panthers, especially with the return of Kelvin Benjamin this season. Shepard also doesn't fit the mold of the wide receiver the Panthers have targeted the past few years, which is typically taller pass catchers. Shepard is only 5'10" but is an explosive wide receiver and could be a big-play threat with Cam Newton as his quarterback.
