Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis are two of the best at their respective position and the Carolina Panthers are lucky enough to have them playing in the same defense. The combination of Kuechly and Davis is the reason that NFL.com's Bucky Brooks ranked the Panthers' linebacker position as the third scariest position group in the NFL and the scariest linebacker group.
Brooks wrote about the Panthers' linebackers:
Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly are the central figures on a defense that bullies opponents between the tackles. Both All-Pro 'backers display exceptional instincts and tackling skills, yet they also boast outstanding awareness and ball skills in coverage. Behind a monstrous set of defensive tackles (Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short), the Panthers' linebackers wreak havoc on opponents around the NFL.
Kuechly and Davis are former first round picks however the two have taken much different career paths. Kuechly was a Top 10 pick for the Panthers and had almost immediate success, winning the NFC Defensive Rookie of the Year award and then winning the NFC Defensive Player of the Year the following year. He has made the Pro Bowl the last three years as well as named to the First-Team All-Pro team.
Davis was also a first round pick but made the transition from safety to outside linebacker once he made the NFL. However, this wasn't the toughest thing he had to overcome as he has suffered three ACL tears and recently broke his arm in the NFC Conference Championship Game. This didn't stop him from playing in Super Bowl 50, only two weeks after suffering the injury.
The combination of Kuechly and Davis helps make this defense special and they will be key to the Panthers' success in 2016.
