Carolina Panthers Centers
Training Camp Battles
Similar to the guard position, there isn't any questions for the Panthers at the center position. Ryan Kalil has been the anchor for this offensive line for a number of years. The Panthers made sure that Kalil would stay in that role for the next three seasons by agreeing to a two-contract extension.
The team also brought in veteran offensive linemen Gino Gradkowski to strengthen depth at the position. Gradkowski started at center for the Baltimore Ravens in 2013 after Matt Birk retired. However he lost his job after suffering an injury in 2014 and was traded to the Denver Broncos before last season. He was released before the season even started though and didn't appear in a regular season game for them.
Player to Watch
The Panthers made a commitment to Gradkowski by signing him to a three-year deal worth $3.15 million and this was the first contract Dave Gettleman gave out to a free agent that was greater than two years.
There is certainly questions though about the center due to the fact that the Broncos were willing to release him before the regular season after trading draft picks to the Ravens. This was a smart move for the Panthers because they do have a player who has starting experience and if the need arises could step into the starting lineup.
While I don't believe his spot on the roster is necessarily in jeopardy, he will need to have a strong training camp though to solidify his spot on this team.
