Predicting the Carolina Panthers Depth Chart After Titans Game

Now that their second preseason game is in the books, Brandon Croce tries to predict what the Carolina Panthers 53-man roster is going to look like at the start of the regular season.

Position First String Second String Third String
Quarterback Cam Newton Derek Anderson Joe Webb
Running Back Jonathan Stewart Cameron Artis-Payne Fozzy Whittaker
Fullback Mike Tolbert
Wide Receiver Kelvin Benjamin Brenton Bersin Kevin Norwood
Wide Receiver Ted Ginn Jr. Philly Brown
Slot Wide Receiver Devin Funchess
Tight End Greg Olsen Ed Dickson Scott Simonson
Left Tackle Michael Oher Donald Hawkins
Left Guard Andrew Norwell David Yankey
Center Ryan Kalil Gino Gradkowski
Right Guard Trai Turner Chris Scott
Right Tackle Mike Remmers Daryl Williams

  • There aren't a great number of changes for the Carolina Panthers on the offensive side of the ball. The only change is that Kevin Norwood makes the final 53-man roster and Damiere Byrd does not. The Panthers have been waiting for the type of game Norwood had against the Tennessee Titans when he caught three passes for 31 yards and one touchdown. The team already has plenty of speed with Ted Ginn Jr. and Philly Brown and could use a possession guy like Norwood over Byrd.
  • One position worth watching over the remainder of the preseason is the backup position for left tackle. Right now, I believe Donald Hawkins has the inside track but the Panthers did add former East Carolina tackle Willie Smith last week, who could compete for that spot.

Position First String Second String Third String
Defensive End Kony Ealy Ryan Delaire
Defensive Tackle Kawann Short Vernon Butler Kyle Love
Defensive Tackle Star Lotulelei Paul Soliai
Defensive End Charles Johnson Mario Addison
Strongside Linebacker Shaq Thompson A.J. Klein Jeremy Cash
Middle Linebacker Luke Kuechly A.J. Klein
Weakside Linebacker Thomas Davis A.J. Klein David Mayo
Cornerback Daryl Worley Robert McClain
Cornerback James Bradberry
Nickelback Bene Benwikere Zack Sanchez
Strong Safety Kurt Coleman Dean Marlowe
Free Safety Tre Boston Colin Jones

  • There are no changes here in terms of which defensive players make the Panthers 53-man roster. However, I have switched Robert McClain, who had as the starter, with Daryl Worley. The rookie from West Virginia is coming off a bad game against the Titans but he continues to get snaps with the first team.
  • The cornerback position as a whole is very fluid at this point and it could change from week to week, even into the regular season. As I mentioned above Worley is coming off a tough game against the Titans while Bene Benwikere had one interception and one sack. The Panthers may be interested in moving Benwikere back outside, especially with Zack Sanchez having a strong performance.

Special Teams

Position First String Second String
Placekicker Graham Gano
Punter Mike Scifres
Long Snapper J.J. Jansen
Kickoff Return Fozzy Whittaker Ted Ginn Jr.
Punt Return Ted Ginn Jr. Philly Brown

  • Even though he has yet to punt in the preseason, I still believe Mike Scifres will be the starting punter for the Panthers when they take the field against the Denver Broncos. The Panthers did release Swayze Waters and add Kasey Redfern last week, which means they are still looking for options. However, Redfern didn't have a strong game which gives Scifres the inside track because of his experience.
