"I'm going to come in here and give it all I have to try to help this team in anyway that I can," said Caldwell. "If that is to start or a back-up."

The Panthers signed free-agent linebacker Mike Caldwell. Caldwell who is 6-2 and 235 pounds, is a 10-year NFL veteran who had played with the Browns, Ravens, Cardinals, Eagles and Bears.

Caldwell last season appeared in 16 games for the Bears with three starts and three quarterback sacks and was released by Chicago on Sunday. He signed a three-year contract worth $2.48 million with a $150,000 signing bonus. The Panthers beat out Philadelphia and Oakland to sign him.

"I really like the commitment at Carolina; they're an up-and-coming team with a blitzing and attacking style," Caldwell said. "I talked to a lot of people about them and it seemed like a good opportunity for me, a chance to get on the field."

Carolina expects Caldwell to challenge Greg Favors for the starting spot at strong side linebacker.

"I'm going to come in here and give it all I have to try to help this team in anyway that I can," said Caldwell. "If that is to start or a back-up."

The Panthers have released linebacker Marquis Smith and Caldwell will fill that roster spot.
