The Carolina Panthers will be without rookie tight end Mike Seidman for the rest of season after MRI tests revealed a torn ACL in his left knee. Seidman, a third-round draft pick out of UCLA, injured his knee following a reception in Sunday's 25-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
"I think Mike's a good young football player," Panthers coach John Fox said. "I've seen steady progress in him. He's a big physical guy at the point of attack as a blocker. He was learning the passing game and I think coming along quite nicely. It's a very disappointing injury for us and for him."
Seidman had five catches for 35 yards this season. Fox said the Panthers could activate tight end Deitan Dubuc off the practice squad or look to sign a free agent tight end. The Panthers are expected to work out a number of players Tuesday.
In the meantime, starting tight end Kris Mangum hopes to be back in the lineup this week against Atlanta providing his knee holds up this week in practice. Mangum missed part of Sunday's game but an MRI on Monday was negative.
If Mangum is still bothered by the injury as the week progresses, Jermaine Wiggins could see more action or possibly start.
In other injury news, middle linebacker Dan Morgan was undergoing tests Monday for dizziness that forced him to leave Sunday's game in the fourth quarter. It's unclear if that condition stems from the concussion Morgan suffered earlier this season.
Fox said Morgan is being tested for "a variety of things. We just have to see what's causing those symptoms.
"I've not had a chance to visit with Dan. I just know our medical people are working tests. I don't know the exact names of the tests. By Wednesday, I'll have a better idea where he stands."
Also, starting cornerback Terry Cousin had an MRI on his strained calf that turned out negative.
Cousin left Sunday's game in the second quarter and did not return. Cousin's status for Sunday night's game against Atlanta remains uncertain. If he can't go, then rookie Ricky Manning will start in the base defense and Dante Wesley will be the nickel back. NOTES, QUOTES, ANECDOTES
--TE Mike Seidman will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee.
--TE Kris Mangum had an MRI on his knee on Monday that revealed no ligament damage. The Panthers hope to get Mangum back this week for Atlanta. If not, Jermaine Wiggins could see a lot of action.
--TE Deitan Dubuc could be activated from the practice squad to replace the injured Mike Seidman.
--WR Kevin Dyson may not get a chance to play this season unless one of Carolina's other receivers gets hurt. "I see good progress, but he's got Muhsin Muhammad in front of him, Ricky Proehl in front of him and Steve Smith in front of him. And the fourth guy (Karl Hankton) plays special teams," coach John Fox said. "So right now, he's kind of where he is."
--K John Kasay was vague on why he missed three field goals and an extra point on Sunday. Kasay said he plans to work hard on Wednesday to correct what is wrong.
--LB Dan Morgan is undergoing tests to determine the cause of the dizziness that forced him to miss the fourth quarter of Sunday's game. Morgan had a concussion earlier this year.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "We came up short. I don't want to put it all on John Kasay. We had opportunities in the red area, you could isolate it to the red area, they were more productive in that part of the field than we were. I think that was probably in a nutshell the difference." -- Panthers coach John Fox on his team's loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
