Gilbert Down is Seifert Out?

The Panthers hope to have defensive end Sean Gilbert back for the season's final three games. Gilbert suffered a sprained knee ligament in the loss to St. Louis. As coach George Seifert noted, those final three games do follow the team's bye week. With Gilbert out, Jay Williams will start at left defensive end and Mike Rucker on the right side.

Chris Weinke's status for this weekend is up in the air. The coaching staff will know more on Wednesday after watching Weinke practice. Weinke has been cleared to play by the doctors, but Seifert said on Monday that they would hold Weinke out this week if they determine that it would be better for him over the long run to get another week of rest.

With the Panthers mired in an 8 game losing skid with the team appearing to go backwards instead of forwards…the question gets asked of George Seifert regarding his future. Honestly, he didn't sound very convincing.

"That's not the issue right now, said Seifert, "the issue is this football team and the next game. I've got a contract and I plan on coaching the club, but that's not the issue right now. The issue is this football team and trying to win some games."
