Carolina Making a Trade?

Are the Panthers currently manning the phones, looking for an 11th hour deal to bolster their running back situation?

With the injuries to Running backs Deshaun Foster, Rod Smart and Stephen Davis, the Panthers are definitely going to have a couple backs in for a visit this week. Davis should be healthy enough to start this week against Philadelphia, but early indications are that Foster's injury will keep him out more towards 10 weeks than 6, leaving a gaping hole behind Stephen Davis, who is coming off of knee surgery and has missed nearly a month of the season already.

One name that has been rumored is Lamar Smith. Smith is currently a free agent and knows the Panthers system, but was released late in 2002 season after he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Thanksgiving Day.

Additionally, league sources tell us Carolina has or is expected to contact the Browns regarding James Jackson or Dee Brown (former Panther), the Houston Texans for Wells, and the Giants for Ron Dayne.

Quiet indications within the Carolina front office is the team is interested in Jets running back LaMont Jordan.

It appears unlikely the Panthers will make a deal, thus leaving them with a street free-agent pickup.
