Smith to IR; Davis Out vs. Seahawks

The Carolina Panthers will place Star Wide Receiver Steve Smith on the Injured Reserve today, ending all hope that the club had to have Smith back at the end of the season.

Smith suffered a broken leg in week one, and had hopes to return late in the season as the Panthers made their post-season push.

"We have placed Steve Smith on IR (injured reserve), so he will be out for the season," Panthers Coach John Fox said. "He is going to be (out) an extended amount of time. He's not going to be out of the boot for a couple of more weeks. We are by no means trying to hurry him back. Just like with all of our injuries, we are trying to get them recouped the best we can. We've got some injuries and we need the roster spot."

Starting Running Back Stephen Davis did not practice today, and has been deemed OUT for this Sunday's game against the Seahawks in Seattle.

"Any time you can't play something that you love and that's your profession, it's frustrating" Fox said of Davis' outlook towards his knee injury. "I would imagine that he is right now. Until the medical people clear him and we evaluate him, even then if the guy doesn't look like he is 100 percent, I won't play him. We are not to that point this week with Stephen." The Panthers elevated Rookie cornerback Eddie Jackson from the practice squad to fill Smith's roster spot.
