QB Jake Delhomme threw for the first time this week on Thursday and is encouraged about his chances of playing this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

"I was encouraged, very encouraged -- we'll leave it at that," said Delhomme, who has a hairline fracture in the tip of his right thumb.

However, Delhomme still has not taken a snap from center, something that could bother the thumb.

Although Delhomme remains listed as questionable on the injury report, he believes he'll play.

"I plan on trying to play if I can," Delhomme said.

"But I don't know how it will react overnight and again tomorrow... I've got to see now if it swells up. But I will take every precaution to get it right."

Drew Carter to IR

Panthers Rookie WR Drew Carter was moved from the Physically Unable to Perform list to the Injured Reserve. Carter tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee on the first day of June minicamps.

Nelson Next?

Panthers Guard Bruce Nelson, who has been on the PUP list all season after having both his right and left hip labrums surgically repaired, must be either placed on the active roster or on injured reserve by November 29th. Although Nelson is technically allowed to practice within the NFL rules, he has not begun practicing with the team, and team sources say that he probably won't for a few more weeks, if at all in 2004. It's highly probable that the Panthers will place Nelson on the IR within the next week.
