With Steve Spurrier headed to Washington, other candidates are coming to the fore for the Panthers. Tony Dungy, who was fired by Tampa Bay on Monday will be a target. But, Indianapolis is believed to be very interested in him. There's also a feeling that Dungy would prefer the Colts situation with Peyton Manning rather than the Panthers with Chris Weinke.
There's also a feeling that Dungy may want to avoid the Panthers since they're headed to the new NFC South with the Bucs. There is concern that Dungy won't want to deal with the twice-a-year circus that will come with that in the short term.
LSU's Nick Saban has been a name that has been tossed around since the beginning of this search, but the feeling continues to be that he'll stay in Baton Rouge. The fact that he was supposed to be a prime target of the Colts and is still in Louisiana should tell us something.
Ravens defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis could be a candidate as well, the question becomes, "how long will the Panthers wait for him to become available?" If other jobs keep filling up and the Ravens keep winning, panic may set in and force their hand.
Despite earlier rumblings in the Bay Area that San Francisco's Steve Mariucci and Oakland's John Gruden may become available, it's looking like that won't happen.
