Panthers trade for Gardner

According to ESPN.com and Redskins.com, the Carolina Panthers have traded an undisclosed 2006 draft pick to the Washington Redskins for WR Rod Gardner, assuming he passes a physical. Gardner will be in Carolina tomorrow, and if he passes the physical, the trade will be consumated.

Washington selected Gardner with the 15th overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft. Gardner, who was a star at Clemson, has started all but 3 games of his NFL career. He notched his best season in 2002, having 1,006 yards on 71 receptions and eight touchdowns.

Gardner now adds another potent weapon to the Panthers passing attack, joining Steve Smith, Keary Colbert and Ricky Proehl. Gardner fits the Muhsin Muhammad mold; he's a big, physical receiver that has battled inconsistency in the past.
