Spotlight: Thomas Davis takes a closer look at one player each week. This week, Linebacker Thomas Davis.

Height: 6-1
Weight: 234 lbs
Position: Outside Linebacker

Thomas Davis is an exceptional Linebacker/Safety coming out of the University of Georgia and was drafted by the Carolina Panthers with the 14th pick overall in the first round. Davis is regarded by many as one of the finest athletes ever produced by Georgia. Blessed with the size of a linebacker and the quickness of a safety, Davis has been a major force for Georgia since making his way into the lineup as a freshman. During his Freshman year he recorded 61 tackles and 3 sacks, while forcing 4 tackles for losses and recovered 3 fumbles and had 1 interception while starting only 4 games in 2002.

During his Sophomore year and with many injuries to the Bulldogs secondary, Davis was forced to play at Free Safety throughout the season. Davis would go on to record a career-high 138 tackles with 4½ sacks, He recovered a fumble for a touchdown, causing two fumbles and returned a blocked punt for a score and intercepted a pass. After a down year during his Junior campaign and being hampered with minor injuries, Davis elected to come out for the 2005 NFL Draft expecting to be a first round pick.

During the Combine Thomas Davis showed very good speed posting a 4.54 in the 40-yard dash which ranked him 2nd behind Derrick Johnson, he also maxed his bench press at an impressive 355 pounds and a very impressive 520 pound squat.

During the April 2005 Annual NFL Draft, He was selected #14 overall by the Carolina Panthers because of his great work ethic and always applying himself to improve his game each and everyday, General Manager Marty Hurney had him #1 on the draft board because he is so versatile and can play any safety position and also play the Outside Linebacker position, the OLB position will be his starting position in this coming season because of injuries to training camp/preseason starter Brandon Short. Look for Davis to come on very strong early and help the Panthers with run stopping which the Panthers so desperately needed in the 04' season, he is also agile enough to guard most Tight Ends and Running Backs in the league during passing plays.
