Morgan signs 5-year extension

While in Philly the T.O. saga has gotten national publicity, the Panthers quietly re-signed one of their Pro Bowl players...

signing middle linebacker Dan Morgan to a 5-year extension worth a reported $28 million, including $10 million in bonus money in the next two seasons.

"What I do is play football," said Morgan. "It's what I've done since I was six years old. I'm out here doing what I love to do. I'm having fun."

"I wanted to stay here. It is a great organization and a great group of guys," Morgan said. "I am looking forward to spending the rest of my career here and winning some Super Bowls."

"Dan is a guy we thought was very, very important to the organization, in particularly to the defense," Coach Fox said. "He has performed very well for us. We think he is an impact type middle linebacker, and he is a guy we wanted for the long term."

Locking up Morgan long-term gives the Panthers a powerful, young defensive nucleus of Julius Peppers, Kris Jenkins, Chris Gamble, Ken Lucas and Thomas Davis along with Morgan.

The next step for the Panthers is to work out a new deal for Morgan's best-friend and fellow linebacker Will Witherspoon.
