Montgomery's baptism by fire

The Panthers benched right guard Evan Mathis on Sunday after just one start, replacing him with rookie Will Montgomery.

Montgomery played well at times, but Minnesota's big sack in overtime came on a Napoleon Harris blitz between Montgomery and center Geoff Hangartner. It's unclear whose responsibility it was to pick up Harris.

"It was an experience out there," Montgomery said. "Jordan Gross told me this probably wasn't the ideal situation being an away game in the dome. They have some solid d-linemen. But we felt like we did a lot of good things out there."

"I think I played solid but there were plays I could have done better on. I have to go back and look at the film. There were a few plays I wasn't sure how I looked so I have to look at the film. I held my own, but there was a few plays I could have done better on."
