Jeff Davidson is presently in contract talks with the Carolina Panthers to be their next Offensive Coordinator, and sources are expecting an announcement to be made tonight.
Davidson was the tight ends and assistant offensive line coach for the New England Patriots from 1997-2004, served as the Browns' Offensive line coach from 2005-06 when he followed fellow Patriots Defensive Coordinator and friend Romeo Crennel to the team from the Patriots. During the 2006-07 season, Davidson replaced an underachieving Maurice Carthon as Offensive Coordinator of the Browns and led the team to victory over the NY Jets in his first game in that capacity.
Perhaps what is most attractive to Fox and his staff is that Davidson is a Charlie Weis disciple, having coached under him from 2000-2004. Davidson helped the Patriots to Three Super Bowl titles in his time with the team. Knowing Fox and his affinity of Charlie Weis, (whom he tried to hire many years ago for the Panthers' OC position), it doesn't come as a surprise that the Panthers would like to have someone that shares Weis' offensive philosophies running the offense.
TE Coach Dave Magazu has been seen scouting the OL talent at the Senior Bowl, and most experts agree that his area of expertise is the OL and not the TE's, his current (or previous... if he moves) area of responsibility. Assuming Magazu is the guy at OL, the Panthers will be in the market for a TE coach. You heard it here first: Don't be surprised to see former Patriots TE, (and former coachee of Davidson), former head coach of Salisbury's Livingstone College and South Carolina native Ben Coates as the next Panthers TE Coach.
