The Carolina Panthers trimmed their roster to 53 today, including veterans Kenyatta Walker, former second round pick RB Eric Shelton and defensive end Dave Ball.
The Players cut were:
QB Dalton Bell,
RB Eric Shelton,
FBs Steven Jackson and Billy Latsko,
TE Chad Upshaw,
WRs Taye Biddle and Kevin Youngblood,
OLs D'Anthony Batiste, Bobby Harris, Rueben Riley, Kenyatta Walker, Thed Watson and
DE Dave Ball, DT Gary Gibson,
LBs Phillipe Gardent and Mickey Pimentel,
CBs Christian Morton and Derrick Strait,
Ss Cam Newton and C.J. Wilson.
"Alex, we thought, had a very good preseason and training camp," said Panthers general manager Marty Hurney on keeping Alex Haynes over former second-round draft pick Eric Shelton. "We thought it was best to go in that direction and keep Alex."
"I think Eric came in and did everything we asked of him since he's been here," Hurney said. "But there are times, if you've been in this business long enough, that you know there will be some players who don't make it as far as high draft choices or high-priced free agents."
The Panthers also decided to keep just two quarterbacks on the active roster for the second year in a row.
"With Brett getting hurt and out for the year, we felt like our best decision was to go with two and keep another player at another position," Hurney said. "That is a matter of rolling the dice some. We know that."
Hurney stated that the team would scour the waiver wire for any player that would help improve the team, but noted that the team wouldn't just be looking for safeties.
"We will look at the waiver wire, not by position, but any player that has a chance to make us better," Hurney said.
