McCown was a starter for many seasons in Arizona before bouncing to Detroit, Oakland and Miami. He's also a guy the Panthers have had their eyes on for a while.
"We liked Josh for several years when he was an unrestricted free agent," general manager Marty Hurney said on Friday. "He's got good intangibles and a strong arm."
McCown, who seemed to have wrapped up the starting gig in Miami, was deemed expendable once the Dolphins signed Chad Pennington, after he was released when the Jets traded for Brett Favre.
And with Matt Moore's injury, it left the Panthers in quite a pickle. As we first reported Friday morning, the Panthers couldn't afford to stand pat with their current QB situation, and ultimately made a move to acquire McCown.
The move also means that third-year QB Brett Basanez will likely be cut unless the Panthers place Moore in the injured reserve list. From everything they are saying publicly, they don't expect Moore to miss much time. Then again, the Panthers aren't really known for letting the whole truth out of the bag regarding injuries.
McCown is a tall, athletic quarterback with a strong arm and good scrambling ability. He spent the last several months learning Dan Henning's offense in Miami -- something that should come in handy as he learns Carolina's offense, which is very similar to what the Panthers still run today under Jeff Davidson.
