Charlotte, NC - Well the Carolina Panthers are looking for help at the quarterback position and it looks like Chris Weinke's days with the Panthers are getting shorter and shorter. Head coach John Fox was not happy with Weinke's play on Sunday when he had to go in they're for starter Rodney Peete.
"Chris didn't perform as well as I would have liked," Fox said. "He made one poor read on a cover-two defense that was intercepted. I thought he didn't perform like he could have."
Weinke relieved an injured Peete in the second quarter and completed only 3-of-7 passes for 14 yards with an interception, and was sacked 2 times as well while he was in there.
"There are usually reasons why guys are No. 2. Ideally you would like to avoid those types of situations. Chris has studied the game and practiced hard. We just have to get him to the point where he performs better in game conditions," said Fox.
Peete didn't play great either completing 14-of-27 for 112 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, but Fox said after watching the game on tape Monday morning that Peete played better than he thought.
"We had some protection breakdowns. And I think the fact that we didn't establish a running game always plays havoc on a quarterback. I didn't think his performance was as poor as I originally might have thought," said Fox.
But just because Peete played adequate doesn't mean that he will be the starter next season, but Fox know that Peete gives the team the best chance to win and will stick with him against the Bears this Sunday. Fox hasn't been happy with either of his back-up quarterbacks Weinke or Randy Fasani
"I think it's production-based, and right now, no matter who has gone in behind Rodney, we have not been as productive with our No. 2 guy playing," said Fox.
Weinke's future with the team remains is in doubt, and Peete might not have the gas left in the tank to go into next season as the Panthers number one quarterback.
