Trgovac promoted to defensive coordinator

Carolina made the decision on Wednesday to promote from within. Mike Trgovac was promoted from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator.

Charlotte, N.C. - On Wednesday, the Panthers announced their promotion of Mike Trgovac to defensive coordinator.  Trgovac, the Panthers' former defensive line coach, will be taking over Jack Del Rio's former position.  The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Del Rio in January.

"Mike Trgovac is an excellent football coach, period," the Panthers' general manager Marty Hurney said Wednesday. "He's been in the league a long time, and he's been very successful. He can be demanding, but at the same time he relates well to the players."

Many were surprised by the Panther's move of promoting from within.  San Francisco defensive coordinator, Jim Mora, Jr. was thought to be filling the defensive coordinator position at Carolina.

"Obviously Jim was involved," Hurney said. "But we were working within a time frame and it got to that point. We felt like we had two very strong candidates in Mike and (secondary coach) Rod Perry. We had a great season defensively and we want to continue that, and we wanted to keep continuity if possible."

Trgovac had an important role in last season for the Panthers.  Brought to Carolina from Washington, Trgovac has constructed a defense that went from last place to second place in the NFL which makes the team and fans ecstatic.

Defensive end Mike Rucker was glad about the decision to promote Trgovac.

"I'm happy they kept it in the family, because now we don't have to go through another year of learning a new person," said Rucker. "We've already been through the pressure situations with Turgo. We had a good year, and he deserved (the promotion)."
