The Eagles placed defensive end Brandon Graham on injured reserve Tuesday and signed veteran defensive lineman Derrick Burgess to replace him on their 53-man roster.
Burgess, 32, is a two-time Pro Bowler with 52 career sacks. He spent the 2009 season with the Patriots. He had five sacks and two forced fumbles with the Patriots last season but was released by New England in September.
Graham, the Eagles' first-round pick in the April draft, suffered a torn ACL in his knee in Sunday's 30-27 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Graham, who had three sacks this season, was rotating at left end with veteran Juqua Parker. Graham had started six games.
This will be Burgess's second tour of duty with the Eagles. He was selected by Philadelphia in the third round of the 2001 draft, and he spent four years with the club. He was injured for the better part of two of those four years.
After registering three sacks in the playoffs for the Eagles in '05, he signed with Oakland as a free agent and led the league in sacks in '05 with 16. He also had 11 in '06.
Burgess was traded to the Patriots before the start of the '09 season.
It's unlikely he'll be activated for Sunday's game against the Giants. Darryl Tapp likely will back up Parker at left end, with rookie Daniel Te'o-Nesheim also possibly getting some reps.
