Patriots Sign DL Jonathan Fanene

The New England Patriots have agreed to terms with former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene.

The New England Patriots reportedly signed defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene from the Cincinnati Bengals, part of a 1-2 punch that put a hole in Cincinnati's defensive line.

Along with the Fanene reports, the Bengals were also said to be losing fellow defensive lineman Frostee Rucker to the Cleveland Browns, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The Patriots made Fanene a top priority after they did not acquire Red Bryant, Wilson reported. He is expected to start for them at left end. Bryant re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Fanene signing was also reported by's Aaron Wilson.

Fanene had a career-high 6 1/2 sacks, and 24 tackles last season for the Bengals. He had six sacks and 36 tackles in 2009, but was out for most of 2010 with a hamstring injury.

In seven seasons for Cincinnati, he's totaled 13 1/2 sacks and 103 tackles.  Fanene, who turns 30 next week, can play both defensive end and tackle.
