Bills WR Johnson tests groin at minicamp
Wide receiver Steve Johnson participated in 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills
at the Bills' minicamp Tuesday as he continues to work his way back
from offseason groin surgery.
The team has taken a cautious approach with its No. 1 receiver, who
said he's getting closer to full speed.
"I feel like I am there. I feel like I am about high 90's (percent),"
Johnson said. "I cannot say 100 percent because I am not feeling all
the way but I am feeling about 90 percent. I am good."
Johnson felt it was important to get in some on-field work during this
final minicamp before the Bills break until training camp. He spent
Tuesday working on running routes and gaining confidence in being able
to push off his left leg.
"I feel like I was a bit slow. Cutting in and coming to the right it
felt like it was heavy," said Johnson, who took part in only 10 plays.
"It is just a mental thing. I did not feel any sharp pain like I did
all last year. I feel like I am good so tomorrow, hopefully, I will be
able to go out there and just focus on plays, who is lined up across
from me, the defense and all that other stuff. Today was more of, if I
cut right here will it pop or what is going to happen next? If I get a
few more plays I will be good."
Johnson first injured the groin during training camp last year, and
said it continued to bother him throughout the season.
The Bills will continue to limit Johnson's work, but want him getting
prepared in the offense along with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
"I think it is good for him to get out there just to get his confidence
back in his groin and get his legs under him," coach Chan Gailey said.
"I thought he did fine and we had a lot of discussion out there.
