With the 2014 draft selection of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the buzz around the league became a probable trading of backup quarterback Ryan Mallet. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, however, minimized any notions of letting Mallet go during an interview with Sirius XM NFL Radio on Thursday.

"That's not really something we're that interested in. Ryan has done a good job for us. Fortunately for our team, maybe unfortunately for Ryan, he hasn't really had any playing time in the last three years. But he's improved tremendously as a quarterback and as a football player, and we have a lot of confidence in him," Belichick explained. "But at the same time, he's in the last year of a contract, and you know, Jimmy was the player we had with a high grade on. At that position, I just don't think you can afford to pass up a player that you think has that kind of value."
Mallet was selected as a third-round pick by the Patriots in 2011 out of Arkansas. A backup to the future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, the backup quarterback has only 17 career passing yards in the last three seasons with New England. Mallet will hit free agent status in 2015.
Gronkowski Trying Out Comedy (NESN)
Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is giving comedy a try, guest starring in the June 2 return of the improvisational comedy show "Whose Line Is It Anyway."
Hosted by Aisha Tyler, the show is returning to The CW after a nearly six year break from television. Gronkowski will pair with cast members to participate in various unrehearsed comedic games. This is not the first acting gig for the tight end in 2014, he also completed work for the upcoming "Entourage" movie which will be released next summer.
Patriots Work Out Terrell Thomas (CSSNE)
New England hosted free agent Terrell Thomas for a workout on Thursday which was first reported by ESPNBoston.com's Field Yates.
The 191-pound cornerback had 67 tackles and an interception for the Giants last season after missing the previous two seasons due to knee injuries. The veteran has spent his entire six-year career playing for the New York Giants.
Drafted in 2008, Thomas has recorded 235 tackles, seven forced fumbles, 12 interception and two fumble recoveries in his NFL career. If signed, he will likely compete against Brandon Browner, Logan Ryan and Kyle Arrington for the number three spot with Darelle Revis and Alfonso Dennard who will be conceivably taking the first two roster spots.
Roster Changes Continue in New England (NESN)
The Patriots continue to sign and cut undrafted free-agents Thursday. Safety Jeremy Deering and wide receiver Greg Orton were cut from the team while safety Dax Swanson and defensive tackle LT Tuipulotu were signed.
Deering, who lasted with the team only six days, played a variety of roles including safety, wide receiver and special teams during his time at Rutgers.
Fifth-year player Greg Orton was signed to the Patriots practice squad on December 31, 2013. An undrafted 2009 free agent, the receiver was originally signed by the Bengals before moving to Denver's practice squad in 2011 and has yet to play an NFL game.
Swanson was picked up by the Colts as an undrafted free agent last season before moving to the 49ers practice squad. The safety had 14 intercepted passes during his college career in Toledo.
298-pound Tuipulotu recorded 42 tackles and 1.5 sacks with Utah last season. The tackle ran a 5.07-second 40-yard dash during his March pro day.
