Halftime Observations: Patriots - Dolphins

A few observations from the Patriots - Dolphins 2014 Season Opener at the half

At The Half: Patriots 20 - Dolphins 10

Rough Start:   The Patriots first possession set the tone for what could have been a long day.  Punter Ryan Allen had his punt blocked after a three-and-out by Brady and co.  The ball was recovered by Miami leading to the Dolphins first score of the game.

Recovering Well:
A slight stumble at the beginning of the game didn’t stop the Patriots from fighting back in full swing.   After a lost punt for a Miami touchdown, the Patriots answered with a quick 80 yard drive in less than seven minutes (6:36).   RB Shane Vereen ran in New England’s first score with a two yard run.

Solid Outing For Edelman:

WR Julian Edelman recorded 95 yards in six receptions in the first half with a couple of impressive catches. His experience with Brady showed as the pair connected on a 44-yard hookup to put New England in Dolphins territory leading to another score.

Secondary Sightings:
DB Alfonzo Dennard, who appeared to be odd-man out in camp, showed by he is still a valuable member of the defense.  Dennard was able to intercept a throw from Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill to snuff out a Dolphins drive at the New England 6.

Darrelle Revis also made an appearance recovering a Miami fumble.  Revis had a close call allowing Mike Wallace to beat him on a double move, but Tannehill overthrew the wideout. Revis then brokeup a would-be Wallace touchdown shortly after.

Gronk is Back:
TE Rob Gronkowski was back in full form, catching the team’s second touchdown of the day on a seven yard catch; adding his signature spike for old time’s sake.

Stat Check:
Steven Ridley and Shane Vereen split rushing attempts in the first half, Ridley with six attempts and Vereen with five. Brady ended the first half a touchdown and 187 yards, completing 19/29 pass attempts. New England net 248 yards in the first half.

Miami Stumbles:

Miami wasn’t in full form for their season opener with three possessions in a row resulting in turnovers for the team. Tannehill had an interception, WR Mike Wallace and RB Lamar Miller both coughed up the bal lon the ground.   Tannehill ended the first half with 10 completions in 15 attempts, recording a touchdown and an interception.

Miami’s Hope:

Miami’s top offensive player in the first two quarters was newly acquired running back Knowshon Moreno rushing for 43 yards in 8 attempts.  Moreno ran hard and strong carrying Patriots players with him after first contact.

With the scores still close, the Patriots are currently topping the Dolphins 20 to 10. Stay tuned for more updates throughout and after the game.
