Patriots vs. Jets: Live Blog

The 4-2 Patriots welcome the 1-5 Jets to Foxboro for a Thursday night showdown. Stay with us to see our live reaction to what should be a physical and entertaining game.

8:07 P.M.- Welcome to Foxboro as we are less than 20 minutes away from kickoff. The rain is still coming down but it isn't as bad as earlier today and that should help the passing offenses get rolling.

8:15 P.M.- Patriots Notable Inactives

G Dan Connelly, C Bryan Stork, WR Aaron Dobson, S Nate Ebner, G-T Cam Fleming, RB James White, CB Malcolm Butler

*Notable Active Player- CB Brandon Browner

8:25 P.M.- The Patriots will receive the ball to open the game. The Jets won the toss and deferred.

8:28 P.M.- Great start for Brady and the offense. Brandon LaFell got it started with a nice catch and run and then Brady, with excellent pass protection, spotted a breakdown in coverage and hit Shane Vereen for a 49 yard touchdown pass. Patriots 7, Jets 0

8:40 P.M.- The Jets put together a solid drive but they stalled out in the red zone. Nick Folk connected on a 22 yard field goal to make the score Patriots 7, Jets 3. Jeff Cumberland had the play of the drive, making a 28 yard catch on 3rd and 5. Devin McCourty fell down in coverage.

8:46 P.M.- The Jets defense stepped up and got a three-and-out. Jonas Gray did have a nice run on second down, picking up five aggressive yards, but that was all that went right on that possession for the Patriots. The ugly series was capped with an ugly punt by Ryan Allen.

8:56 P.M.- The Patriots defense has had a rough start, but they are stepping up when they have to. Nick Folk connects on his second field goal of the game, this time from 47 yards out, which cuts the Patriots lead to one. Darrelle Revis gambled and tried to make a pick, but Geno Smith made a perfect throw and Eric Decker made the catch. Browner got called for holding; that won't be the last time we hear that.

9:03 P.M.- Another three and out for the Patriots offense. Odd play calls, especially on third down. The protection seems ok but nobody is getting open. The Jets like to drop up to eight guys in coverage, so it's no surprise they're doing it again.

9:14 P.M.- The Patriots allowed the Jets to pick up yardage again, but they held New York to another field goal, this time a 46-yarder to make the score Jets 9, Patriots 7. The Patriots offense needs to get it together so the defense can get a breather; they're clearly gassed.

9:26 P.M.- Masterful drive by Brady and the offense. Everyone got in on the action; Edelman for 16, Gronkowski for 16, LaFell for 23, Vereen with a run for 23, and the capper, Vereen for the three yard touchdown catch. The Patriots defense gets the rest they need and the score is now Patriots 14, Jets 9.

9:40 P.M.- It's Nick Folk time again! The Patriots are getting gashed by Chris Ivory and the Jets running game, but they're getting the stops when they need them. One thing to note- Brandon Browner hasn't played since the first series. Patriots lead, 14-12.

9:49 P.M.- Brady leads his patented end of the half drive, but Jordan Devey was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty (I have no problem with what he did) when his Brady took a cheap shot. Gostkowski nailed the field goal to make the score Patriots 17, Jets 12.

10:05 P.M.- The Jets get the ball to open the second half. Let's see if the Patriots run defense has adjusted.

10:11 P.M.- 3rd and 12 for the Jets as they continue to have success between the 30's. The Patriots have big issues at linebacker.

10:13 P.M.- Terrible defense all around for New England. Jamie Collins looked especially bad on that drive, and Revis getting scorched by Eric Decker on 3rd and long didn't help either. Chris Ivory leaps over the top for the 1 yard touchdown, Jets regain the lead, 19-17.

10:26 P.M.- It is pretty clear that Shane Vereen is not the type of back that can handle the full time load. He plays light and never has good body lean when he finishes runs; he's a receiver playing running back. Jonas Gray looked much better running between the tackles. The Patriots put together a good drive, but they couldn't convert on 3rd and long and had to settle for the Stephen Gostkowski field goal. Patriots retake the lead, 20-19.

10:34 P.M.- The Patriots defense steps up and gets a stop and the Jets punt for the first time tonight. Rob Ninkovich finally set the edge properly and made a strong play on Chris Johnson. Now it's time for the offense to come in and widen the lead.

10:38 P.M.-The Jets defense answers with a three and out. Shane Vereen could have had a run go for longer if he was more decisive. There is a difference between patience and being timid. Vereen is timid.

10:43 P.M.- Chandler Jones makes another sack and the Patriots defense appears to be coming to life at the right time. Dont'a Hightower is playing much better in the second half.

10:48 P.M.- Another poor showing for the offense. The Jets stepped up and made the plays, but the Patriots are shooting themselves in the foot, which is unusual. The defense is going to have to win this game.

10:52 P.M.- Geno Smith is down and appears hurt. His knee got rolled up on but it would be irresponsible to say if he is truly injured.

10:56 P.M.- Brandon Browner got called for a bogus hold but as Rasheed Wallace says, "ball don't lie" and the Patriots got the stop. Brady leads the offense out to try to make this an eight point game.

11:02 P.M.- Danny Amendola sighting!! Huge touchdown catch for the beleaguered wide receiver. He's contributed in the return game and the offense tonight. Brady made a great play to avoid pressure and Amendola made a great catch. Patriots lead, 27-19.

11:14 P.M.- The Patriots defense once again allows the Jets to look like the '99 Rams, but after the Jets scored, they could not convert the two point conversion. The Patriots still lead, 27-25. Just over two minutes to go so the Patriots will be looking to pickup a couple first downs and end this game.

11:25 P.M.- Well, here we go. 1:06 to go and the Jets need a field goal to win. Patriots defense needs to step up and get the stop.

11:29 P.M.- Chris Jones blocks the 58 yard field goal attempt and the Patriots escape with a 27-25 victory. It wasn't pretty and there appear to be issues at linebacker that may need to be addressed by personnel moves, but a win is a win. The Patriots improve their record to 5-2 and the Jets drop to 1-6.

11:32 P.M- Thanks for watching the game with us tonight and we hope to see everyone next week when the Patriots welcome the Chicago Bears to Gillette in what should be a wild game.
