Patriots Acquire Bears Linebacker Jon Bostic

As the Patriots head into their bye week, they add depth to the linebacker core by trading for Jon Bostic, a former second round pick out of the University of Florida.

The Bears started shipping out players today, and the Patriots got in on the action. New England acquired former Florida Gator and Chicago Bear Jon Bostic, a third year linebacker who was the 50th selection of the 2013 NFL Draft. The Bears expected big things out of Bostic, who started 17 of 29 games, totaling 103 solo tackles, 37 assisted tackles, two sacks, one interception, one fumble recovery, and four passes defended, but his career didn't take off like the Bears had hoped. Bostic has been battling injuries in 2015 and has slipped down the depth chart. In 2014, the Patriots traded for then Titans linebacker Akeem Ayers, a move that turned out to be a stroke of genius as the talented playmaker made major contributions for the Super Bowl Champions.

In three seasons at the University of Florida (2010-12), Bostic compliled 141 solo tackles, 78 assisted tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, eight interceptions, 11 passes defended, two forced fumbles, and one touchdown. Bostic is the son of former Lions defensive back John Bostic, who played for Lions from 1985-87. Bostic attended Palm Beach Central High School in Florida and was a four star recruit. He was highly recruited, passing up Auburn, Clemson, LSU, Florida State, Miami (FL), South Carolina, Tennessee, UCF, and the University of Southern California to sign with the Gators.

In exchange for Bostic, the rebuilding Bears will receive a 6th round pick from the Patriots. New England must feel that their depth at the position isn't strong enough headed into the 13 game sprint they're about to endure, and adding Bostic will definitely bolster their overall linebacker talent and depth. Bostic is only 24 years old and there is room for growth, something Patriot coaches have been able to help talented players accomplish. Bostic still has to pass his physical, so the deal should be announced by the Patriots tomorrow.
