4:05- Welcome to Week Five! Today the Patriots and Cowboys do battle in what should be an fun game to watch. Let's take a look at the inactives for today's game.
Patriots Inactives: DT Khyri Thornton, WR Aaron Dobson, DE Trey Flowers, LB Rufus Johnson, G Ryan Wendell, S Tavon Wilson, LB Jon Bostic
Cowboys Inactives: QB Kellen Moore, WR Dez Bryant, WR Brice Butler, OL La'el Collins, TE James Hanna, DE Randy Gregory, DE Ryan Russell
4:25- The Cowboys will begin on offense and we get our first look at the Brandon Weeden-led Cowboys.
4:29- Three-and-out for the Cowboys as the Patriots defense looks good on their first series. Dallas should have attempted to run twice, but I'm not their OC. Out comes the Patriots offense.
4:32- Great job by the Cowboys defense after the Patriots offense looked like it was about to drive down and score. Greg Hardy is alreay making his presence felt, giving Nate Solder trouble on the first drive and getting to Brady.
4:35- Big sack by Hightower on third down and the Patriots defense looks good for a second drive in a row. Let's see if the offense can adjust their blocking and give Brady the time he needs to pick apart this secondary.
4:39- New England picks up the field goal to take the initial lead. Greg Hardy was heard from again, making a blind-side sack of Brady after an impressive move to elude Nate Solder. New England should think about doubling him more often. Patriots 3, Cowboys 0
4:51- The Cowboys looked like they were stopped, but a Jamie Collins sack was negated by a Jabaal Sheard holding call and Dallas took advantage by driving after the penalty occurred. Dan Bailey connected from 51 yards out; like we said in the preview, it is pretty much a wash when it comes to the kickers today. Patriots 3, Cowboys 3
5:02- After an initial first down and some nice running by LeGarrette Blount, the offense flames out on third-and-one from the 50. The Cowboys are playing inspired football on defense, something the Patriots should have been more prepared for. Patriots 3, Cowboys 3
5:07- It's pretty clear that both defenses are here to play; Dallas had a third and one that would have continued the drive, but New England defended it well and forced Weeden to throw it away. Dallas should try running it more on first and second down because they are keeping this close, one of the keys to establishing the run versus the Patriots.
5:14- New England better figure out how to block these guys or this is going to be a LONG day. Greg Hardy is hitting Brady on every play; it might make more sense to keep an extra tight end in and double Hardy on every play because even if Brady has less targets, he'll eventually find someone open if he has time to throw.
5:19- The Patriots defense continues to look stout as they force the Cowboys offense off the field yet again. The Patriots offense is only going to stay quiet for so long, so Dallas better wake up on offense or their excellent defensive start is going to be wasted. It wouldn't be the first time that happened to a Patriots opponent.
5:28- Touchdown, Patriots!! Tom Brady plunges in from one yard out and the New England offense finally drives down and punches one in. Greg Hardy continues to give the Patriots fits, but screens, slants, and draws will slow down this Dallas pass rush and like I said before, the Patriots offense will kick it into gear. Julian Edelman had a long catch and run on the drive that was the crucial play to set them up for the touchdown. Patriots 10, Cowboys 3
5:34- Chandler Jones dropped a sure interception, but the Patriots force another three-and-out and give their offense a chance to get into rhythm. The secondary is having a good day versus the undermanned Cowboys receiving core.
5:37- Rough series for the Patriots offense as they go three and out again, not something they're accustomed to doing. Let's see if the defense can get them one more possession in the first half.
5:50- Stephen Gostkowski steps up and kicks his career-long 57-yard field goal to give the Patriots a two score lead going into the half. The Cowboys have sacked Tom Brady five times in the first half, something that must be cleaned up in the second half. New England will have the ball to open the third quarter. Patriots 13, Cowboys 3
6:14- Touchdown, Patriots!! Dion Lewis with a 10-yard touchdown catch from Tom Brady, and he earned every one of those yards with an incredible run-after-catch. Lewis has definitely carved out his role in the offense and he's been quite a find for Belichick and Co. Rob Gronkowski was the key performer on the drive, making two catches for 51 yards and unleashing some anger on Cowboy defenders in the process. Patriots 20, Cowboys 3
6:33- The Cowboys finally put together a good drive on offense, but the Patriots excellent red zone defense stepped up yet again and got the stop to force a 23-yard Dan Bailey field goal. Very questionable decisions regarding the amount of pass rushers on that drive; blitz Weeden, he takes forever to get rid of the ball. Patriots 20, Cowboys 6
6:46- Touchdown, Patriots!! Julian Edelman hauls in a Tom Brady pass and takes it 59 yards for the touchdown. The refs didn't make this drive easy, calling another pick on the Patriots on what appeared to be a long catch-and-run by Danny Amendola. The refs and even the announcers need to figure out what a pick is versus a rub-route or even defensive pass interference. Patriots 27, Cowboys 6
6:53- The Patriots defense strips Jason Witten and comes up with a killer turnover; New England takes over at the Dallas 39 with 11 minutes to go.
6:58- New England goes four and out and turns the ball back over to Dallas. As big a bag as Blount is, he really struggles on short yardage plays; it might make more sense to use Lewis because of his quickness. Patriots 27, Cowboys 6
7:04- Interception, Patriots! Logan Ryan makes the play and this game is getting closer and closer to being wrapped up. The New England defense, besides the one drive Dallas put together in the third, has completely dominated this game and appear to be getting better every week. The injury to Dont'a Hightower isn't good, but everything else has been great for this defensive unit today.
7:11- Stephen Gostkowski connects again and the Patriots make it a 24-point game with just over four minutes to go. The offense, even with their troubles slowing down the Dallas pass rush, still puts up 30 points. One negative- Nate Solder left the game with an injury, so that is something to keep an eye on going forward. Patriots 30, Cowboys 6
7:26- The Cowboys come up short on fourth-and-goal and fail to punch one into the end zone today, which is great for the Patriots and also those fantasy owners who started New England today. It wasn't a perfect day, but Bill Belichick and the Patriots will take a 24-point win any time they can get it.
FINAL SCORE: PATRIOTS 30, COWBOYS 6
Be sure to join us next week as the Patriots travel to Indianapolis to take on the hated Colts, the softest team in the NFL. It should be quite a game to watch after the Colts started the Deflategate fiasco during the AFC Title game they were destroyed in. Hopefully Andrew Luck is back so there are no excuses when New England wins by three touchdowns- again.
