Patriots 53 Man Projection (Post Week 53)

Now that Week Three of the preseason is over, we are going to take a look at the Patriots and who we think should be on the 53 man roster.

Quarterback (2) - Tom Brady*, Jimmy Garoppolo, Jacoby Brissett

On the Bubble - NONE

IR/PUP - NONE

Last week - SAME

- Nothing has changed from last week and nor will it outside of an injury to any of these three. Brady will start the year off the 53 man roster as he is suspended for the first four games.

Running Back/Fullback (5) - LeGarrette Blount, Tyler Gaffney, James White, Brandon Bolden, James Develin

On the Bubble - D.J. Foster

IR/PUP - Dion Lewis

Last week - SAME

- Like quarterback, nothing changes here either. D.J. Foster is fighting for a roster spot and had some bright spots against the Panthers but has ground to make up. Unless he blows the Patriots coaching staff out of the water next week, he is most likely going to be one of the final cuts.

Tight End (3) - Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett, A.J. Derby

On the Bubble - Clay Harbor

IR/PUP - NONE

Last week - SAME

- This is a competition between Derby and Harbor for the number three tight end spot isn't resolved just yet, but Derby has the upper-hand. Unless Harbor blows up next week, Derby will most likely have the edge for the last tight end spot.

Wide Receiver (6) - Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, Keshawn Martin, Aaron Dobson, Matthew Slater

On the Bubble - DeAndre Carter, Devin Lucien, Chris Harper

IR/PUP - Danny Amendola

Last week - Edelman, Hogan, Amendola, Mitchell, Martin, Slater

- The only change is Amendola is on the PUP section now. Still working his way back from off-season knee and ankle surgeries, Amendola probably won't be activated and stays on the PUP list into the regular season. That opens up a roster spot, which goes to Dobson. He is still fighting with Carter, Lucien and Harper for it, but it will most likely go to him because of his solid off-season/training camp.

Offensive Line (9) - Nate Solder, Marcus Cannon, Cameron Fleming, LaAdrian Waddle, Joe Thuney, Josh Kline, Ted Karras, Shaq Mason, David Andrews

On the Bubble - Tre' Jackson, Chris Barker

IR/PUP - Sebastian Vollmer, Jonathan Cooper

Last week - Solder, Cannon, Fleming, Waddle, Thuney, Kline, Karras, Andrews, B. Stork

- Two changes this week. One, the Patriots traded Bryan Stork to the Redskins for a seventh round pick, meaning that David Andrews has won the center job by default. In Stork's now vacant spot, Shaq Mason takes over there. With the injuries to Vollmer and Cooper (most likely both go on the IR with one having the chance to return this season), Mason will most likely stay on the active roster and the team will bide their time for his recovery from his broken hand. Vollmer is dealing with a hip injury and Cooper is dealing with plantar fasciitis, that has kept him out for several weeks now.

Defensive Line (10) - Malcom Brown, Alan Branch, Vincent Valentine, Markus Kuhn, Anthony Johnson, Rob Ninkovich, Jabaal Sheard, Shea McClellin, Trey Flowers, Barkevious Mingo

On the Bubble - Terrance Knighton, Frank Kearse, Geneo Grissom

IR/PUP - NONE

Last week - Brown, Branch, Valentine, Kuhn, Johnson, Ninkovich, Sheard, McClellin, Flowers, Grissom

- Two changes this week as well. The Patriots acquired Mingo from the Browns a couple of days ago for a fifth round pick. That alone will likely make him a lock for the roster. With the new addition, Grissom is on the bubble. He possesses the position versatility and raw talent that Belichick covets, but he hasn't stood out this pre-season. Mingo plays the same position as Grissom, which may push Grissom out the door.

Terrance Knighton is not at all a lock to make the team after not playing any snaps on Friday night. The Patriots appear to be unhappy with his lack-luster performance and may be seeing the door soon.

Linebacker (4) - Jamie Collins, Dont'a Hightower, Jonathan Freeny, Kamu Grugier-Hill

On the Bubble - Ramon Humber, Elandon Roberts

IR/PUP - NONE

Last week - SAME

- No changes from last week. Grugier-Hill offers a lot of speed and versatility as a linebacker/safety hybrid and should make the team. Humber and Roberts are decent inside linebackers, but aren't necessarily needed with Hightower and Collins and Freeny (with a new contract extension) there already.

Safety (6) - Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Duron Harmon, Jordan Richards, Nate Ebner, Brandon King

On the Bubble - Vinnie Sunseri

IR/PUP - NONE

Last week - SAME

- No changes here either. McCourty and Chung are the starters, Richards and Harmon are their main back-ups while Ebner and King both hold valuable special-teams roles. Sunseri has a small chance of making the team as a special-teams contributor, but it's unlikely with the depth the Patriots have.

Cornerback (5) - Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan, Cyrus Jones, Justin Coleman, Jonathan Jones

On the Bubble - Cre'Von LeBlanc, Darryl Roberts

IR/PUP - NONE

Last week - Same

- Arguably the deepest position for the Patriots, the only real competition is for the last cornerback spot between Jones and Le'Blanc. Both have done well in training camp and the pre-season, but the edge goes to Jones right now. It's not settled yet, but unless Jones implodes, he wins the spot. LeBlanc would likely be back with the team on their practice squad.

Specialists (3) - Steven Gostkowski, Ryan Allen, Joe Cardona

On the Bubble - NONE

IR/PUP - NONE

Last week - SAME

- No changes here. These positions are set and neither of these three have any competition.
