Live Blog: Super Bowl LI- Pats vs. Falcons

Chris Simoneau, Patriots Insider for Scout.com, provides in-game up to the minute updates and opinions from Super Bowl LI in Houston, Texas. The Patriots take on the Falcons in what should be a wild game.

Welcome to Super Bowl Sunday! In case you missed it, you can hear the injury update here. Now we have the actual inactives, which are listed below.

Patriots Inactives- QB Jacoby Brissett, WR Michael Floyd, CB Justin Coleman, CB Cyrus Jones, RB DJ Foster, S Jordan Richards, T LaAdrian Waddle

*We were off by one in our projection during the podcast.

Falcons Inactives- WR Nick Williams, S Dashon Goldson, RB Terron Ward, CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson, LB Josh Keyes, G Wes Schweitzer, and TE DJ Tialavea

We are still and hour and 23 minutes from game time, so we'll be back in about an hour.

The captains are getting ready for the coin toss and we are close to game time. We have a VERY pro-Patriots crowd here is it appears the Foxboro faithful have traveled well for Super Bowl LI.

FIRST QUARTER

15:00- The Falcons win the toss and defer, meaning the Patriots will receive to open the game. The Falcons do have an advantage getting the ball to open the second half, but they've been killing teams with their 1st drive touchdowns over the last two months, so giving that possible momentum boost to New England if they score is a gamble. This should be fun.

15:00- Lewis downs it in the end zone, Pats take over at their own 25.

14:11- Three and out as Blount gets stuffed on 3rd and 1. Huge play for Atlanta, that could really be big in this game.

13:25- 37 yard run for DaVonta Freeman on 1st down and the Falcons couldn't have a better start. New England better be careful or this is going to be 7-0 nothing in no time. Falcons look more prepared so far.

11:55- 3rd and 4, Falcons...

10:48- Trey Flowers with the sack and the Patriots defense steps up in a big way after the offense was forced off after four plays and one first down. The Patriots take over at their own nine after excellent punt coverage by Atlanta. Patriots 0, Falcons 0

9:49- 13-yard catch, Amendola. First down, Patriots.

9:32- 15-yard reception by Hogan and the Patriots pick up a second straight 1st down.

8:23- 2-yard run by Blount, 2nd and 8...

7:46- 7-yard reception by Mitchell, 3rd and 1...

7:10- 11-yard catch by James White, 1st down Patriots at the Falcons 40...

6:27- Sack by the Falcons, loss of nine. Cortney Upshaw made a nice play, went through Mason.

5:48- Dropped pass on the wheel route by James White; he could have made the play. 3rd and 19...

5:35- Brady sacked again, and this was simply a coverage sack. The offense was driving, but that sack on 1st down was a drive-killer. The Falcons offense will get another chance to get the first score of the night. Patriots 0, Falcons 0

5:00- Nine-yard run by Tevin Coleman on 1st down. 2nd and 1...

4:30- Five-yard catch by DeMarco, 1st down Falcons...

3:38- Two-yard run by Freeman, and the Patriots finally shut down the gaps and stuff the run.

2:58- Logan Ryan with an excellent tackle on Coleman after a five-yard run. 3rd and 3, Falcons...

2:34- Alan Branch gets to Ryan and forces him to the ground, driving the Falcons offense off the field and continuing the defensive battle that has broken out in the first quarter of this Super Bowl. This game feels exactly like the Patriots/Panthers Super Bowl; slow start followed by an explosion of great football. New England takes over at their own 17.

1:27- 13-yard reception by Edelman, 1st down, Patriots.

:52- Seven-yard run by Blount on 1st down, just what this offense needs.

:20- Two-yard run on 2nd down makes it 3rd and one from the Patriots 26. That'll end the first quarter with no score, which is a surprise but a trend for the Patriots and Tom Brady in the Super Bowl.

SECOND QUARTER

15:00- 3rd and one, Patriots....

14:50- 27-yard catch by Edelman, giving the Patriots the 1st down on the Atlanta 33.

14:08- Blount fumbles, Falcons recover. Turnovers lose Super Bowls, just remember that. New England was in a prime position to score their too, huge play by the Falcons defense. The Patriots defense needs to answer. Patriots 0, Falcons 0

13:34- 19-yard catch by Jones and Atlanta is starting to move the ball. The Patriots defense needs to step up while the offense wakes up.

12:30- Freeman with a huge run down to the Patriots 15...

12:20- Another strong cutback by Freeman, setting the Falcons up at the Pats five...

12:15- Touchdown, Falcons. Freeman takes it in on a counter for an easy score. The Patriots defense looked completely lost on that series, and if they don't figure out how to stop the run, Atlanta is going to blow the Patriots doors off. Falcons 7, Patriots 0

11:55- Already 3rd and 7; the Falcons are flying around and the Patriots look stunned. This isn't good.

11:08- Dion Lewis makes the catch out of the backfield, but he is corralled and New England is forced to punt yet again. The Patriots offensive gameplan stinks once again in the Super Bowl, something that has happened three of the last four times they've been here. The Blount fumble shouldn't force his departure from the game, it was a good play. They need balance, and how about a screen against this fast defense? Ugly stuff, and the Patriots are playing with fire because the Falcons can score in bunches. Falcons 7, Patriots 0

10:03- Two-straight 1st downs through the air for the Falcons and they're at the Patriots 20 already. If the Patriots allow another touchdown here, they could be in deep trouble.

8:55- Chung with the breakup and the Falcons are facing a 3rd and 9...

8:48- Touchdown, Falcons. New England was called for a weak pass interference on the play, but it didn't matter because the ball was caught. This is worst start in a Super Bowl in the Belichick-Super Bowl era. If the Patriots don't score on the next series, this game could get ugly very fast. Falcons 14, Patriots 0

8:36- 14-yard catch by Bennett, 1st down Patriots.

8:07- Incomplete pass to Edelman; 2nd and 10.

8:02- Brady under pressure and he almost threw a pick. 3rd and 10...

7:55- Holding on the Falcons saves the Patriots and they pick up a 1st down.

6:42- James White trips over his own feet after a gain of seven that should have been more. 3rd and 3...

6:01- Atlanta called for holding in the secondary again and the Patriots get another 1st down on a 3rd down penalty.

5:16- Patriots facing a 3rd and 9 because James White can't make the catch on second down.

5:12- Another holding, another 1st down.

4:24- 13-yard catch by Martellus Bennett and the Patriots are at the Falcons 28.

3:50- 1st down run by Dion Lewis for three yards. 2nd and 7...

2:24- Touchdown, Falcons. Brady with an ill-advised throw and Alford takes it for a pick-six. Once again, like I just said on Twitter, the Patriots offense stinks for the 3rd of their last 4 Super Bowl appearances. It's the ugly truth; this isn't on the defense, not one bit. Falcons 21, Patriots 0

2:00- Two-minute warning here; Patriots need to put together a touchdown drive or this game is over. That is not an over-reaction, the Falcons offense is going to score more points in this game. New England needs a touchdown now. Falcons 21, Patriots 0

1:43- Bennett makes a miracle catch on a ball that was batted at the line of scrimmage and he gains 15 yards on the play.

1:37- Brady with a big miss on the play, but the next play he buys time, hits James White, and he runs 28 yards to the Falcons 29.

:52- Hogan for a gain of eight...

:30- Huge 3rd and 2 for New England...

:23- 1st down catch by James White and the Patriots take an immediate timeout. New England is at the Falcons 15 yard line; they need seven, not three.

:03- A complete cluster**** by the Patriots at the end of the half, and Josh McDaniels continues to suck calling Super Bowls. Seem harsh? Well, it's the truth. The defense needs to save the offense yet again in the Super Bowl, something that has happened in '07,'11, the first three quarters of '14, and now the 1st half of '16. There is just no excuse for continuous poor first offensive outings in the Super Bowl.

:00- End of the half; Atlanta Falcons 21, New England Patriots 3

HALFTIME

15:00- Can the Patriots defense make a stop and get back into this game? This is the most pivotal series of the game so far.

14:02- 3rd and 6 for the Falcons...huuuuuge play...

13:19- Eric Rowe with the nice breakup on Gabriel after a terrific jam at the line; the defense does their job, but can the Patriots offense? Edelman with a big return sets up the offense at the Patriots 47. Brady leads the offense back out onto the field. Falcons 21, Patriots 3

13:02- Terrible drop by Hogan; he needs to make that catch.

12:57- Terrible play design; seriously, stop it McDaniels, enough of that quick screen. It's amazing how badly the Patriots offense has played in this game. 3rd and 12...

12:52- And yet ANOTHER drop by Edelman, and I hate to be that guy, but this game is all Atlanta. New England can't do anything on offense, and eventually Atlanta is going to start scoring some points. How can an offense like New England's disappear in the Super Bowl on a regular basis? It can't be ignored. Falcons 21, Patriots 3

11:22- This is about to get ugly. Blown coverage and the Falcons are setup at the Patriots 28.

10:11- Sanu for 13, 1st down.

9:50- The Falcons are tearing up this defense now, facing a 2nd and 2 from the Patriots 8...

9:05- 2-yard loss, 3rd and 4. Need a stop here and force three....

9:00- PI called on Butler; awful call, drive stays alive and the Falcons score on the next play. The Patriots are getting destroyed and the Lombardi Trophy is headed to Atlanta. Falcons 28, Patriots 3

8:22- The Patriots just don't matchup with this underrated Falcon defense. These guys are fast and talented.

7:24- Why not use no-huddle and try to up the tempo? This plan makes no sense and hasn't worked at all.

6:00- Wow, I've seen it all. YOU HAVE TOM BRADY! Why run a trick play? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

5:49- Amendola with a 17-yard catch for the 1st down, and he follows it up with a 2-yard catch. 2nd and 8.

4:40- Brady with a 15-yard run for the 1st down; Patriots are at the Atlanta 20.

4:00- 4-yard run by Blount, 2nd and 6.

3:07- 10-yard run by Blount, 1st and goal from the seven...

2:06- Touchdown, Patriots! James White with the catch and score, but of course Gostkowski missed the extra point. The Patriots just aren't good tonight, end of story. Falcons 28, Patriots 9

:36- Sack, Patriots. New England forces the three-and-out after an onside kick, and the offense will have the ball down by 19 to start the fourth quarter. New England needs to get the no-huddle going to up the tempo and try to gain an extra possession.

:00- End of three from Houston and it's all Atlanta. Falcons 28, Patriots 9

FOURTH QUARTER

15:00- 1st and 10, Patriots from their own 15...

13:14- 2nd and 10 from the Patriots 40 after Brady misses a wide open Edelman...

13:03- 1st down catch by Malcolm Mitchell, Patriots at the Falcons 45.'

12:36- James White for nine, 2nd and 1 from the 34...

12:20- Amendola gets tackled, no call. 3rd and 1....

12:14- Bennett with a 25-yard catch to the Falcons 8. 1st and goal...

11:41- Sack, Falcons. 2nd and goal...

10:55- 3rd and goal...the Falcons are swarming...

9:44- 32-yard field goal makes this a two-score game, but everyone knows the Patriots needed a touchdown there to make this a game. I will say this- New England needs to take a long look at their personnel on offense, because when they get to Super Bowls, the offense is not the same as the regular season; not even close. Falcons 28, Patriots 12

8:44- 3rd and 2 for the Falcons. Big play for the defense; if they make the stop, the offense could make this a one score game, assuming they can do what they haven't done all night- score quickly.

8:24- Strip sack, Hightower!! The Patriots recover at the Falcons 25. They have life! Patriots need a touchdown and two to make this a one-score game.

8:12- Freeney with the sack on 1st down.

7:33- 4-yard gain by White, 3rd and 11, again...

6:56- 12-yard catch by Malcolm Mitchell, 1st down, Patriots.

6:29- Amendola with a 7-yard catch; 2nd and 3 from the Atlanta 7...

5:56- Touchdown, Patriots!! Six-yard catch by Amendola and the Patriots are suddenly down by 10. James White takes the direct snap for the 2-conversion in and cuts the lead to eight! We suddenly have ourselves a game. Falcons 28, Patriots 20

5:53- Great kickoff by Gostkowski, Falcons pinned back at their own 10.

4:40- Julio Jones might have just clinched this game with a toe-tapping 27-yard catch to put the Falcons at the Patriots 21.

4:32- McCourty comes up and makes a strong play. 2nd and 11...

3:58- Trey Flowers with his second sack of the night, a HUGE play for the Patriots defense. The Falcons are at the Patriots 38.

3:44- Jake Mathews called for a HUGE hold that may drive the Falcons out of field goal range.

3:38- Well, the defense did their job. Edelman back to receive the punt and makes the fair catch at the eight. Here. We. Go. This is the ballgame.

3:30- Incomplete, 2nd and 10....

3:17- Deep pass is incomplete. Bad play call, you need 1st downs. 3rd and 10...

3:09- 1st down catch by Hogan to stay alive....

2:34- Weird throw by Brady, miscommunication somewhere. 2nd and 10...

2:28- 12-yard catch by Mitchell, 1st down at their own 36...

2:12- What. A. Catch. Edelman makes a David Tyree-ish catch and the Patriots have a 1st down at the Falcons 41.

1:57- 20-yard catch by Amendola sets the Patriots up at the Falcons 20 with plenty of time to go. What a crazy fourth quarter; if the Patriots can pull this off, it would be the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.

1:47- 13-yard catch by White; 1st and goal from the 7...

:57- Touchdown, Patriots!! Now all that matters is the two....which is good! Tie game! 28-28. Atlanta will have plenty of time though. Patriots 28, Falcons 28

:52- Here we go. 1st and 10 Falcons from the Patriots 11...

:03- The defense holds and it appears we are headed to the 1st overtime in Super Bowl history. What an amazing comeback.

:00- End of regulation. Patriots 28, Falcons 28

PATRIOTS WIN THE TOSS AND WILL RECEIVE. IF THEY SCORE A TOUCHDOWN, THEY WIN. If the kick a field goal, Atlanta gets a chance to win or tie. After that, sudden death.

OVERTIME

15:00- Brady and the offense takes over at their own 25...

11:08- Touchdown, Patriots!!!!! The Patriots complete the improbable comeback and are the 2016 World Champs!! Congratulations Patriots, that was amazing!!
