Patriots Trade For TE Dwayne Allen

The Patriots jumped into the offseason fray with a cannonball by trading a 4th Round pick to the Colts for tight end Dwayne Allen, which means Martellus Bennett will be moving on.

The Patriots didn't waste any time making news during this tampering period, trading a 4th Round pick to the Indianapolis Colts for tight end Dwayne Allen and a 6th Round pick. New England was in talks with Martellus Bennett about a return, but the trade for Allen makes sense because he's as good if not better then Bennett, and his contract is right in line with what they want to pay their second tight end.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported the deal:

Allen is just 27 years old, and although he has had some health issues throughout his career, he is a very productive player who happens to be one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL, much like Bennett, the man he is replacing. Allen and Gronkowski will be a dangerous duo, assuming Gronkowski is ready to go after his back surgery last year. Allen was a 3rd Round pick out of Clemson in 2012, and in his career he's started 56 of the 57 games he's appeared in, piling up 126 catches, 1451 yards, and 19 touchdowns.
