James White Signs 3-Year Extension With Pats

The Patriots signed running back James White to a three-year extension, locking up the talented receiving back that's developed into one of the best weapons in the league.

A busy Tuesday has finished with a bang tonight as the Patriots have re-signed running back James White to a three-year extension, rewarding him for his contributions mainly in the passing game. White was due to become a free agent after the 2018 season, so he'll be with the Patriots until 2021, assuming he isn't cut or traded.

The deal was reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter:

Since being drafted by the Patriots in the 4th Round of the 2014 NFL Draft, White has shown that his main skill is catching the ball out of the backfield. His rookie season was more of a redshirt year, finishing with just 14 touches for 61 yards. His second year would be completely different as he became a real factor in the Patriots offense. He finished 2015 with 40 catches, 410 receiving yards, four touchdown catches, 22 carries, 56 yards, and two touchdown runs. He wasn't much of a factor in the run game in 2015, going down on initial contact pretty much every time he carried the ball.

Going into 2016, White had the chance to get more playing time because Dion Lewis was dealing with an injury. White stepped up, finishing the season with 60 catches, 551 receiving yards, five touchdowns, and 39 carries for 166 yards. He still wasn't very effective as a pure running back, but his average per carry did double, and he proved in the Super Bowl that he could break a tackle when he took it in for the winning touchdown run in overtime. White had 14 catches, 110 receiving yards, one touchdown catch, six carries, 29 yards, and two touchdown runs, one again being the aforementioned game-winner. He's getting better ever year, and he fits into the stable of backs with different skill sets that the Patriots currently possess. James White keeps getting better, and now he's being rewarded for it financially.
