Aaron Hernandez, the former Patriots tight end serving a life sentence for murdering semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd in 2013, hung himself to death in his prison cell. He was found at 3:05 AM and was pronounced dead just after 4 AM at the UMass Hospital in Leominster, Massachusetts.
Adam Schefter tweeted the statement released by Christopher Fallon of the Massachusetts Department of Correction:
This is a sad ending to a sad story about a man who had it all, but made horrible decisions that ultimately caused him to want to take his own life. I'm sure more will come of this story, but it is already one of the worst tragedies we've ever seen in pro sports, and the ending is just odd and sad. Sometimes real life can be crazier than a fiction novel.
*Update: Hernandez' lawyer has now stated that he believes his client was murdered, as does the family, and they will be launching an investigation. This story just keeps getting weirder by the minute.
