According to word around the college circles, Sanders was a budding star at Fresno State. He possesses football smarts and can be a playmaker. A hard hitter and defensive leader, opted to leave Fresno State early. Found out he wanted to return to Fresno State for his Senior year, but his NCAA appeal was denied.

The Patriots are familiar with Sanders via his coach at Fresno, Pat Hill, who was with Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli during their tenure in Cleveland. Hill made the recommendation for Logan Mankins the Patriots first-round draft choice. Pioli mentioned that they (the Patriots) talk to a lot of guys in the college level, and Pat Hill is one of them.
