New England Patriots
1 (32) Logan Mankins; OG - Fresno State
3 (84) Ellis Hobbs, III; CB - Iowa State
3 (100) Nick Kaczur; OT - Toledo
4 (133) James Sanders; S - Fresno State
5 (170) Ryan Claridge; OLB - UNLV
7 (230) Matt Cassel; QB - USC
7 (255) Andy Stokes; TE - William Penn
Analysis: Looking to add depth, size, and intelligence to the interior of the offensive line, the Patriots pulled off yet another of their customary draft surprises with the selection of Mankins in the first round. While not receiving much acclaim, Mankins is the type of player the Patriots typically seek – a hard-working, intelligent player who plays within the team concept and is reliable.
Hobbs is yet another team-first, role-specific type player the Patriots focus upon. While not being the most talented or highly rated overall, Hobbs can step in and compete as a slot corner while being a viable candidate in the return game, both areas New England wanted to address this off-season.
Selecting Kaczur in the third round would be considered a reach to many, but the Patriots have a definitive plan for the former Toledo product. Kaczur can be expected to see time as a guard with the Patriots and should get an opportunity at tackle as New England tends to look towards versatility when possible.
